DECODING FASHION

DECODING FASHION

Someone at a recent event asked me, 'What does fashion mean to you'? And I told them what I am about to tell you, something that I've always believed in but not many people have understood this love/passion I've had for this field of arts since as long as I can remember. Fashion, for me, is a way to express yourself, to express who you are, what you feel and what you want to be. Fashion, for me, has never been a means of showcasing affluence or attracting attention. It is a medium to stay connected with your sensibilities in terms of design, creativity, intellect and above all your own self.

I've never understood why so many people like to think fashion is not for the intellectuals and is often regarded as a frivolous topic of conversation, when the fashion-retail industry powers the world economy like none other. Also, there is so much thought process that goes behind construction of one simple garment, forget an entire collection. Fashion is as much an art, as it is a business and there's so much that we can learn from this world of fashion, if only we keep our eyes open and focus on the right things.

If you've read the previous post about Blank Slate, you'll know I was very inspired by the thought process that the founder has put into the making of this brand. So this time around, I decided to fill this Blank Slate with my colors and my own interpretation of the design aesthetics of this brand. This post reminisces that time in childhood, when we use to play with slates and colored chalks in school. The slates were full of our imagination and whimsical fantasies back then but now as an adult it is almost impossible to recreate that same magic.

But here's an ode to colors, shapes, graffiti and mismatched drawings that invoke a hint of nostalgia in you. And coming back to the starting point of this post, I hope you see how fashion is not just what meets the eye but something that's so much more than that. It is an endless channel of creativity, authenticity, inspiration and an unsurpassed medium of being in touch with your humble self. It is an inextricable part of life or better even an inextricable part of you. Do you agree?
